Touristic Itinerary in Tuscany: Cortona and the Trasimeno Lake

Route map: daily tourist journey of about 49 km

Departure and arrival: "Podere the Villetta" farm house with children's playground

Using the "Podere La Villetta", Tuscan farm house, as a point of departure and arrival, we suggest a tourist itinerary to the discovery of Lake Trasimeno on Umbrian land, but just a few miles from Foiano della Chiana and Cortona.

Cortona suspended on the green of the valley and where they dominate wells, endless fields and Lake Trasimeno. Not to forget, between August and September, the Exhibition-International Mobile Market of the most prestigious market in Italy. The precious Tuscan meat are celebrated in Cortona in August at the famous Steak festival: On an immense wire rack of 14 square meter, nourished by burning carbon, are cooked thousands of steaks cooked rigorously rare.

Returning downstream, in direction of Perugia, we recommend to step in Passignano on the Trasimeno: The oldest village is still today crammed by the medieval walls that significantly testify to the development that the center suffered from small agricultural village during the Roman Empire, where the castle which, after Signora di Uguccione II died in 1917, was long disputed between Arezzo, Perugia and Florence. Few historic buildings of the town remain today due to the destruction caused by the bombing of the Second World War, in fact still remain only the 1400 church of San Rocco and the one erected years later by San Bernardino. From Passignano, in a few minutes of boat, you can get to Isola Maggiore, on Lake Trasimeno where you can visit the Roman church of the 12 th century, that of San Michele Arcangelo of the 14 th century and the Villa Isabella of the Marchesi Guglielmi.

Castiglion del Lago was built on a promonium of calcareous rock on the eastern shores of Lake Trasimeno. The first to occupy this area were probably the Etruscans, as the remains of tombs were found in the area. The most visited building of the whole village is, however, without doubt, the castle that cutes from a mighty mural structure with four towers is one of the most impressive examples of military art in Umbria.

Beyond this beautiful day between monuments and landscape, it's nice to catch up with the "Podere La Villetta" farm house after waiting for the standard tuscan kitchen dishes that have been prepared for by locals in tradition.
